For a name that’s as synonymous with mobile phones as Nokia, it’s sometimes hard to understand why they have never really been able to crack the smartphone market, at least not in the same way Apple and HTC have, and some of the other manufacturers are starting to. All this could be about to change however, as the Finnish mobile giant tries to make up for lost time and opportunities, with the launch of the N8. But does Nokia even know what it takes to make a competitive smartphone anymore, and if so, is the Nokia N8 it?

Out of the box, the N8 looks pretty impressive. There’s none of the bulk and clumsy looking design that has been the downfall of so many Nokia phones. Instead, the N8 is quite sleek and slender, maybe not as thin as some of the other smartphones, but certainly not fat. And the neat design works with the colored aluminum case to give you the impression of a high quality, modern smartphone. Interestingly for a Nokia, there is no way of removing the battery, which helps with the appearance, and shows Nokia’s confidence in their new operating system that none of the forced resets, that earlier smartphones were prone to, will be needed.

The N8 has the required touchscreen display of any serious smartphone contender, and at 3.5 inches it’s more than adequate, for users and to keep up with the competition. What will grab your attention however, is the incredible 12 megapixel camera with xenon flash that is very neatly housed in the N8′s slimline body, capable of amazing photographs, as well as 720p HD video recording, with an mini HDMI output for playback on larger screens. Nokia may be trying to make a bit of a point with what it says is the best phone camera in the world, and it has succeeded. Better than any other available smartphone, it makes the N8 stand out from the crowd for the right reasons, and will make sure it gets some serious consideration alongside the top smartphones.

It will take more than an impressive camera for Nokia to get back in the game, and the inclusion of the new Symbian 3 operating system will certainly help. Although it’s an evolution of the previous versions, rather than a revolution, it’s a significant improvement. Combined with the powerful 1GHz processor, everything on the N8 moves smoothly, including the impressive music player – a prerequisite for any successful smartphone, that also benefits from the huge 16GB internal storage.

It may be that Nokia has left it too late to come up with anything that is going to seriously challenge the iPhone and other top smartphones, but the Nokia N8 is undoubtedly the Finnish giant’s best shot. If all the latest tech and software work well together, the other smartphone manufacturers will have to start taking Nokia seriously again.
