Should you Jailbreak Your iPhone? The Process, The Risks, and The Benefits

Did you know that it’s legal to jailbreak, or unlock, any mobile device in the United States – including the Apple iPhone? There are other risks that I’ll get into in a minute. However, jailbreaking your phone is a powerful act which allows you to not only use it on carriers other than ATT, but also to install 3rd party apps.

Although this offers enhanced features, it also involves some risks.

Just a few of the benefits of using unlock software on an iPhone include being able to download 3rd party apps, connecting wirelessly to a PC or Mac, customizing the apps on the homescreen, and customizing the entire OS through the use of “skins”. You can also set your phone up as a free hotspot for Wi-Fi.

Benefits:

It’s a very simple, one step process to unlock a phone with a good unlock package. Probably the main reason for so many people wanting to jailbreak their phones is so that they can use them on carriers other than ATT. In the US, ATT is notorious for having spotty service. T-Mobile, in particular, is well-known for having great service and for being willing to accept jailbroken iPhones.

One other big point that’s worth going into more depth over is that the IOS’s home screen can be very easily customized to look much cooler. You can install new themes and skins, as well as tweak the design of logos and colors. In addition, did you know that many games that you can get from Cydia and other 3rd party sites are near clones of the ones in the App store, but do not carry monthly charges?

Possible Reasons Not to Jailbreak:

Apple Corp. considers the jailbreaking process to be illegal despite the governmental ruling to the contrary. They are pushing out software that will attempt to disable to the ability to jailbreak their phones. They say that regardless of legal status, jailbreaking means voiding your warranty on your mobile device. When you purchase an iPhone, Apple has fine print on the box that means you are entering into a purchase agreement with them. This agreement is null and void if instructions for jailbreaking your phone are not followed to a “T”. And it might be null and void anyway if they find out.

The company also has sole rights to sue a person or company that is likely to persuade someone to breach the contract signed. Furthermore, the Apple store will not fix or repair any jailbroken phone following violation of the agreement.

Jailbreak Software: A Review of the Three Top Jailbreaking Applications

For today’s update I would like to present an opinion of those that are, in my educated opinion, the Top 3 Phone Unlocking Software Sites on the web. Every one of these applications is capable to unlock your phone or device pretty much on its own. You simply install the software application. If you are going to jailbreak a device, don’t try to become a hacker and do it without any help. Grab one of these applications and get it accomplished in five minutes flat. In descending order of quality, the following are my best choices…

1 – Auto iPhone Unlocker

This is my top pick. You’ve got to see it working to believe how easy it is. Since this is a bit of a hobby of mine, I’ve used this package personally on more than 25 iPhones and iPods for friends and clients. You download and install it, hit “Go” and then the unlock take less than 5 minutes from beginning to end. Seriously – you hit the “Go” button and then go grab yourself a soda while the app cracks your phone or MP3 player. Also importantly, the Auto iPhone Unlocker does a complete jailbreak. Some of the other packages out there do an incomplete jailbreak. I’ll break it down for you: When you do a complete jailbreak, this suggests that you can use your Apple device on carriers outside of the ones that Apple tries to force down your throat. An incomplete jailbreak, on the other hand, will let you install 3rd party apps from Cydia or elsewhere, but doesn’t touch the SIM card. The company that makes this package only take Paypal, which might be a pain for some people. But by the same token, this tells you that they’re a reputable company and not just some fly by night outfit. I also have had good experiences with their customer support team, which was a win. The cost was pretty low too. Like I said, this package is my top pick, and I give it 5 stars.

2. iJailbreak Machine

In addition another one that I’ve used recently. Better-than-average application in general. The total hack process (following the download) was completed in around 11 minutes, which is not that bad. They also takeaccepts Paypal. My primary complaint was that the site only offers an incomplete jailbreak. This is okay if you’re unlocking device that is not Apple, or if you’re okay with using your Apple device on Sprint. The cost is a touch lower as a result, so if you simply wish to hack your device and do not really have concern about using it on some other provider, or if you’re usinga phone that is not an Apple, it can be a really great option. Similar to my #1 option, the instructions were very easy to follow.

Another problem though, was that they don’t offer customer service over the phone. Only via email. Overall score of 4 stars.

3 – iPhone Unlock Global

The only reason that this product made it into my Top 3 was that they’re above board. They do actually jailbreak your phone, and they won’t just steal your money, unlike half of the apps out there for jailbreak software. And they do offer a jailbreak that is complete. They’ve been around probably longer than any of the 2 other companies, so you’d think that they would have a better product. They try to claim that they unlock a phone in less than 6 minutes, but in my experience, this is complete fiction. It took me almost 25 minutes, including 15 minutes on the phone with tech support to get it done, mainly because their instructions were inadequate. They are also more expensive than #s 1 and 2 up above. Overall grade of C.

Why Use Jailbreak Software to Hack Your Iphone?

First Off:

So you have your iPhone and you can install thousands of apps from AppStore. What’s all this commotion about jailbreaking? Why would you need to jailbreak? What does it offer? In this post, I will cite some of the most compelling reasons to jailbreak your iPhone. I will continually update this post as changes occur.

Why Not the Appstore:

Basically, Apple’s restrictions on apps for the App Store are too limiting. The apps that you can get outside of the App store from places like Cydia are sometimes superior, since they break at least one of Apple’s rules. Those rules are only in place to keep the iPhone under Apple’s heavy handed control.

There are myriad rules that Apple puts on the App Store: No modding system files, you can’t install apps that run in the background, apps have to stay in the sandbox, etc. Apple doesn’t want you doing certain things that take away their control. These rules are all for their benefit – not yours.

Risk Free:

When you jailbreak a phone, you are not necessarily unlocking it, which could void your warranty. There is absolutely no risk, and as of 2010 at least, it’s completely legal. Everything that you could do before a jailbreak, you can still do afterwards. Jailbreak software will only add functionality – it never takes any away. You can even still use the app store. It does NOT void your warranty. And if you ever want to “un-jailbreak”, all you have to do is to restore iTunes to get back to a factory default state. Tons of people are doing this – you’ll be far from the only one. Some estimate say that over 15 Million iPhone alone have been jailbroken.

Benefits:

Oh, boy. You can do some pretty amazing things after you jailbreak your phone. You can customize the background, skin, and entire OS with apps like Bosspaper or Winterboard. You can start doing Fast Toggles, Quick Replies w/ SMS, You can use Cydia, you can track your phone if it’s ever stolen, and you can even use your phone on carriers other than ATT if you do a full unlock. The question might be asked: What CAN’T you do with a jailbroken phone?

How To Jailbreak:

The first thing to do is to get on Google and look for a reputable jailbreak software package to help you to jailbreak automatically. Only you can choose the one that will work best for your situation, but I recommend using one that integrates the pwnage hack, depending on your IOS.

What Does the Law Say About Jailbreaking Iphones?

The whole notion of DRM took a tiny bashing today as users’ rights won out over those of copyright holders.

As of the ruling, it is completely legal to unlock iPhones.

Jailbreaking your iPhone (hacking it to “free” it from the shackles of Apple’s strict app management policy) has been controversial for a while, with Apple and the user community playing a game of cat and dog with new versions of the iPhone’s OS, and new jailbreak exploits popping up.

In the past, Apple has even threatened to press criminal charges against anyone caught jailbreaking an iPhone. They said that jailbreaking was contraindicated by a law from 1998 that was meant to protect manufacturers and to prevent end users from getting past copyright security on electronic devices.

The new ruling, though, effectively legalized using jailbreak software on any electronic device. It allows end users to break DRM in this manner for what is being called “fair use” – for example, allowing the device owner to have a say and control over what applications they decide to install on their own cell phones. It’s a major win for individuals who have been striving for ages for net-neutral rules such as this.

And Apple probably won’t mind about this aspect of the new laws, as all it will have to do is adjust its EULA to reinforce the point that any user who jailbreaks their phone instantly absolves Apple of any blame in any potentially disastrous events that occur as a result.

Other exemptions revealed today may well stick in Apple’s craw a little (or at least, AT&T’s), because it’s now permissible to break DRM so that you can switch wireless carriers. That’s actually going to have big implications in the U.S. cell phone market, compared to Europe, where unlocked phones are pretty typical.

More than anything, though, the new regulations will come as a bit of a shock to the computer/media industry in general which has become used to using DRM to “protect” its interests, even when these interests are actually contrary to what you may think are actually their customer’s best interests.

The fact that these rules passed at all is somewhat shocking, when you consider the amount of money that these industries spend on lobbying in Washington.
