The Nokia N9

Released this week by the Finnish manufacturer, the Nokia N9 has seen a return to the press for Nokia. However this time there is nothing to suggest we are witnessing the demise of the phone manufacturer, neither is there a focus on Microsoft and their imminent arrival on Nokia phones with Windows 7 operating system.

Instead the tech critics appear to be embracing a brand new ‘fast and simple’ to use smartphone. This new device runs using the MeeGo operating system, and upon first glance appear to be a quite stunning piece of kit.

The focal point of the release has been in its design and therefore usage. There is no ‘home’ button; in fact there is no button on the front of the phone at all. Instead a swiping gesture replaces button functionality; similarly unlocking the phone can be achieved by double tapping the screen. Simply swipe from the edge of the screen to the centre and you will be navigated ‘home’.

The look for the phone is very stylish. Made from a single piece of polycarbonate and then curved glass, the device looks impressive sleek and slender despite featuring a 3.9 inch display. Similar to other smartphones on the market the N9 makes use of an AMOLED display.

It is clear from Nokia’s press release that the device is intended for the top end of the smartphone industry, competing with the iPhone 4 and HTC Sensation. The press release appears to take a shot at Apple stating that the polycarbonate body gives superior performance for the antenna. No doubt a pop at the difficulties Apple faced upon the iPhone 4′s launch.

Other key features of the new Nokia handset is its capacity for NFC (near field communications), and also its Dolby post-processing technology making the phone capable of surround sound. Couple these functionalities and it makes playing your music through speakers simple and quick.

It is also pleasing to see that the phone hasn’t dropped the camera standards from its earlier released Nokia N8, albeit less mega pixels the N9 camera has HD quality video capture and large lens aperture

In terms of memory the N9 comes in a 16GB and 64GB version, giving plenty of space for digital content. The phone is available in either black, cyan and looks equally stunning in each colour. IT remains to be seen whether or not the phone will actually compete with the smartphone big 4.

Pay For Stuff With Your Mobile Phone!

A brand new technology is on the way for mobile phones – the near field communication (NFC for short) chip. This has been a feature of phones in Asia for a couple of years now, with a short-ranged 13.56 MHz signal, useful over a range usually about 4 cm but can be up to 20 cm, it can be used to swipe the phone to make payments. For instance, it would allow your phone to be used as a credit card or to buy bus or train tickets at a turn stile. This is how it has been used in Asia and it is being publicised as the biggest technology to hit the US & European mobile phones for years; however until now this has not happened.

The setup required to use the chip in Europe and the US is not in place quite yet. Many shops were reluctant to invest in expensive equipment that would only be used by a small number of customers. A few companies have now decided to push the issue though, so adoption is beginning to become more widespread.

One of the best features of NFC is the way it uses an initiator and a target, the initiator could be the ticket machine or paying point in a shop whilst the target can be an unpowered chip, allowing it to be included in items such as cards, keychains and so on, enabling it to draw it’s power from the initiator.

The technology is still absent from many recent phones, so you won’t be seeing it just yet in the likes of the Nokia E6, but it is making an appearance in some top of the line phones. Samsung and Google’s Nexus S is an interesting example, because the original Galaxy S – which the Nexus S is very strongly related to – lacked this ability suggesting it was Google who thought it was an important addition.

This could also be connected to the unexpected absence of a microSD slot on the Nexus S, something Android users have become accustomed to (and a feature incorporated into the Galaxy S), in order to increase the phone’s internal memory.

Some of the technologies being demonstrated at the recent MWC, Mobile World Congress, were based on the niche created by phones like the Samsung Galaxy Ace and the HTC Wildfire S lacking NFC technology.

The first of these is from Visa, who, similar to Google, chose to take steps to push the adoption of NFC technology. It utilises a card that fits into the microSD slot of the HTC Wildfire S & communicates with apps on your phone to give complete NFC functionality. While this denies you the use of the slot temporarily, the ease with which microSD cards can be swapped, even in phones which do not allow ‘hotswapping’, should not make this much of a problem.

The impact of this technology should be significant as almost all retail businesses will very quickly move to allow this option. In addition, services such as public transport will have to build card readers which will make paying for tickets far more efficient for consumers.

The new Nokia X7

Nokia’s latest release is the Nokia X7. Around the time everyone got their first mobile phones, Nokia was one of the most popular brands, boasted the first phone to vibrate as well as the first phone with an internal aerial. Many people have fond memories of the Nokia 3210 and the 3310. Now Nokia have finally brought out something else worth talking about – the X7. The lure of the smartphone has been too much for many, so they can now discard their old snake-playing phones in order to get their fancy touch screens.

As with previous Nokia smartphones, the X7 will have a Symbian operating system. But since the N8 the Nokia X7 has upgraded from the Symbian^3 to the Symbian Anna. The Symbian Anna is not quite the Symbian^4 but more a Symbian^3.5. The X7 will be the first Nokia (along with the E6) to have Symbian Anna installed, although there is mention of older models being able to be upgrade to Symbian Anna.

The main changes that have been implemented to Symbian Anna from Symbian^3 include a new browser interface. The scrolling transition will be quicker and as it is expected to work in real time. Finally, the keyboard will be portrait allowing for a better interface.

The X7 will of course come as one of Nokia’s many contract phones so no changes there. Nokia are really trying to push this phone as having given a new design to smart phones. It’s made out of stainless steel and looks so contemporary that Swedish furniture designers would be impressed. With an impressive 4 inch screen, it’s pretty good to look at and can still fit in the palm of your hand. Okay so it isn’t the Pantech C300, but never mind that.

At least the X7 is more up to date than many phones. Yet, some of the ‘new’ features have a feeling that they’ve been done before. They claim that you will receive updates on your homescreen – a lot of Windows phones already have this feature. The homescreen is said to be customisable. That’s nice, but we’ve been able to do this for a while now. But at least it comes with free GPS and really fast Internet. But the Internet depends on where in the world you are, so won’t help you in remote parts of Yorkshire.

Well the official specifications are as follows: 146g, 119.7 x 62.8 x 11.9 mm, and it comes in silver or black. It is of course USB compatible for storing photos and other data. On standby this device can last for 450 hours, but if you’re really chatty you can talk all you want for 4 and a half hours. For videos this is increased to 6 hours and if you’re using it instead of your MP3 player that’s a whole 50 hours of music you have right there. The impressive 16.7 million colour screen makes the days of snake seem really far away.

But what about Apps? Take a deep breath. The apps it already comes with are as follows: Calendar, Contacts, music player, internet, messaging, photos, Ovi Store, Maps, Videos, Web TV, Office document viewers, Video and photo editor, Mail, Radio, Nokia Ovi Suite, and the Nokia Ovi Player. If that isn’t enough for you I’m sure you can find some to download.

Over the years Nokia has come up with some classics and some great new smartphones. Whether or not the X7 will be the same, we’ll find out soon enough.
